Creating a Puzzle

Why puzzles?

Life is a puzzle itself. Why we need extra puzzles? Puzzles are a trainnig ground arming human mind. Solving puzzle gives great inspiration. This makes puzzles a subject of entertainment. Solved puzzle also indicates person's intellect. So, puzzles are subject of competition. Example: chess.

Puzzles as a business

From time to time, we see an offer to create a puzzle or game to decorate web site, magazine, or for its own sake. Not every puzzle fits every audience. Too easy puzzle is boring. Too hard puzzle is annoying. 1. Know range of puzzles for given audience. Know range of audience for given puzzle. 2. Entertaining quality: easy to understand - progressive mastering - hard to reach the top, minimum explanation - maximum naturality, rules text must be short, self-explanatory, objective-text must be short, self-explanatory 3. Puzzle has dress and mathematical model. Dress is how model is presented to a human player: story, plot, narrative, images, animation, Dress can greatly reduce explanation part if not to remove it completely. 4. Good puzzle hard to create and need a lot of resources. If you create it manually, you need not only solve it yourself ( which is a time for good puzzle ), but solve many variants to choose the best, and to find these variants. If you use a computer, you need to program map generator and solver, just to discover the computer does not have enough power to get even in half.

Puzzles for hire

Ask your client: 1. Media. Interactive? Video? Images?, Text? 2. Human features involved: Motor: dumb shooter, Eyes: mosaic recollection, restore images, Mind: thinking, calculating, memorizing: Crossword, Sudoku, Sokoban, Chess, ... Mixed: eyes, mind, motor: Tetris Depth: checkers - easy; chess - harder. 3. What is an audience? Does it prefer eye candy, dress, ... Does it tolerate puzzle with long but exhausted explanation? ... Does it need low depth? ... Does it honor brilliant mind, surprise, don't care how say chess-unit look? What is context of a puzzle: magazine, site, gaming forum? 4. How much client wants to pay? The more resources, the better product you can make. 5. To really cooperate, client should solve your puzzle him/her self. 6. Don't work with clients who don't understand 4 and 5.

This may be achieved if hero's breed and environment are chosen correctly. For Monkeyban puzzle, students (monkeys) need to be put on chairs for the teacher to be able to become a lesson. From experimenting with movements, player can discover that the teacher can push students but not pull and the students try to mock each other movement if they are close. However in case of this puzzle, the choice of characters is still not enough to skip textual rule and textual objective: so click on help/rules and help/objective. However, without this dress, rules take much longer to explain, but on the other side, player is free to focus on mathematical part, on "real meat" of a puzzle. Not saying, Chess or Sokoban puzzles vary greatly from simple depth to very hard. If you solve this puzzle, Monkeyban puzzle, easily, there are more difficult levels. See level indicator "Puzzleness" on left top. The objective is to bring each breed to own place: monkey to bananas, chicken - into eggs. Still not perfect dress, should be much better.
